New Moon – August 2021
Be present with me for a minute. Yesterday was the new moon, so I’m thinking about new energy. – new years, new starts and new creations. I understand that if you are into or know about astrology, yesterday was also called the Lion’s Gate portal, astrology is not something that I know very much about, but I’m mentioning it because it’s associated with powerful creation and abundance energy, and whether or not you truly connect to the full language of astrology, there is never a bad time to bring attention to what is your heart and how you can bring more of that into your life. I thought I would…

Reaching for Sanity in Your Crazy Busy Life? Do This!
How long has it been since you’ve felt in control of your day? Although you appreciate having a full calendar it’s painful to reach the point where important things are being dropped or sacrificed. It’s just not sustainable to have your to-do list continually be longer than your grocery list. I remember this feeling well. I thrive on having a lot to do. I love to “be busy” and to have people rely on me. However, being wired this way also means that I have experienced embarrassment and frustration when my workload has gotten out of control. It’s means I’ve had to say, “I was supposed to do this and…

Seven Signs of Transition
The beginning of September is a common time of transition for many of us.For those (like myself) in the Northern Hemisphere it marks the end of the summer, the start of a season change and we begin to prepare to enter the colder, darker months. Students return to school. Work tends to shift into a higher gear. Like a microcosm of the world which is shifting around us, for many of us, the start of September is a period of internal review and transition. Make no mistake, even though we feel naturally drawn to this process, change or awareness of the need to change is challenging, confusing and uncomfortable. Here…

Autumn Equinox Check-In
Even if you do a daily check-in I still think that weekly and monthly check-ins add additional value. They offer a different perspective gained from reflection over longer periods and an opportunity to lay the groundwork for creating the successes you want to bring into your life over a longer time period! Even though the temperature here is more like summer, this is the Autumn Equinox. Autumn or Fall is a glorious time of year to look back and see how all of the “crops” that you planted have grown! These are great prompts for you to think about, meditate on, discuss with friends (or your coach!), journal about,…

A Break Amidst The Overwhelm
I have a client who has a fourteen-year-old son who is in the hospital. He’s there after two straight weeks of blinding headaches. The family visited Sick Kids twice and were sent home being told that there was nothing diagnosably wrong with the child. Upon a third visit to the hospital, the cause was identified and the child has been admitted. The good news is, there is treatment and although it’s not immediately clear the length or details of the path back to health, there is a path. This same client also lost his brother this past weekend. He needs to continue to work full time to support his family.…

Are You Taking Enough Me-Time?
How much pressure do you feel to be “going” all the time? Many people in our culture associate level of importance, success, and popularity with being continually on-the-go. If we are not hustling, working and putting our energy into something, we believe we are wasting time. We may feel taking time for ourselves is “new-agey”, privileged, or a waste and that it won’t accomplish anything. To some extent it’s true – continually pushing yourself often brings some measure of success. However, most of the time going for long periods without time for yourself will cost you. Stress, overwhelm and exhaustion are known to crop up and be made worse by…

Is Regret Making You Crazy?
There are a lot of quotes about regret being a waste of time. For a long time, I would parrot those types of phrases. I understood them intellectually but it wasn’t until I really sat down and got to know some of my regrets that I really came to understand that what they say, is actually true. The poet Ghalib said “Every particle of creation sings its own song of what is and what is not. Hearing what is can make you wise; hearing what is not can drive you mad.” When I originally read this I was thinking about vicious “thought wheels” that we get stuck in when we…

Stop being a glass. Become a lake.
An aging master grew tired of his apprentice complaining, and so, one morning, sent him for some salt. When the apprentice returned, the master instructed the unhappy young man to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then to drink it. “How does it taste?” the master asked. “Bitter” spit the apprentice. The master chuckled and then asked the young man to take the same handful of salt and put it in the lake. The two walked in silence to the nearby lake, and once the apprentice swirled his handful of salt in the water, the old man said, “Now drink from the lake.” As the…

Being Whole Means Loving the Obstacles
It is hard to love and appreciate the things that frustrate you. The question though, is how much is that frustration holding you back? What parts of yourself do you need to wall off and protect from your own frustration? It’s a subtle thing – you may think that what you are doing is keeping another person or a negative thought at a distance but, look closely at it. You may be keeping them at a distance but what is it “costing” you? You cannot use a coffee filter to wash rice. It’s true that using one will keep any grains from falling through but the process will be so…

How To Start To Address An Unfulfilling Work Situation When You Don’t Know Where To Start
One of the easiest ways to start to address an unfulfilling career or work situation is to understand what would be better. This may sound daunting at first, but getting started is actually easier than you think. To get started on the path to a more fulfilling situation, allow yourself to ask and answer the question. What does my ideal life look like? At first, this may seem difficult and even silly. You have thoughts like: Why bother with this, I can’t make it happen, OR No one gets to live their ideal life As you answer the question: Focus only on “the what” not “the how” – you do…
